Make sure you're prepared for those critical first two minutes of a fire. Choose from a complete line of Gielle portable fire extinguishers to protect your people and property.

Portable fire extinguishers come in a range of sizes and ratings, and the higher the rating, the larger the fire it can be used on.

However, larger and heavier extinguishers (which generally have the higher ratings) can be more difficult to handle, especially for persons of a lighter build.
It is recommended that the extinguisher you buy is approved by standards.

Fire Extinguishers - Types & Uses
Portable Fire Extinguishers can save lives and property by putting out or containing fires within the capability of the extinguisher.

However, they must be of the correct type for the particular fire, and they must be used correctly.

Selection of Fire Extinguishers
There are a number of types of portable fire extinguishers.
Each type of extinguisher may be rated for one or more classes of fire. In some cases, particular extinguishers are not only considered ineffective against certain classes of fire, they can be dangerous if used in those circumstances.

The classes of fire are:
Class A Ordinary Combustibles
Class B Flammable and combustible liquids
Class C Flammable gases
Class D Combustible metals
Class E Electrically energised equipment
Class F Cooking oils and fats

The most common types of extinguishers are:

Aviation Water extinguishers
Suitable for Class A fires. Not considered effective for Class B and Class C fires, and dangerous if used for electrically energised equipment or cooking oils or fats.

Water Fire Extinguishers offer protection against Class A fires that typically involve common combustible materials such as wood, paper, straw, textiles, soft furnishing and materials.

Aviation Foam extinguishers
Suitable for Class A and Class B fires, with limited effectiveness for Class F fires. Not considered effective for Class C fires, and dangerous if used for electrically energised equipment.

Foam Fire Extinguishers offer protection against Class A and B Fires that typically involve liquids or materials that liquefy such as petrol, oils, paints and fats. Foam extinguishers form a layer over the top of the burning substance and remove oxygen from the fire. Foam Fire Extinguishers may also be referred to as AFFF (aqueous film-forming foam)

Aviation Powder extinguishers
Powder Fire Extinguishers offer protection against Class A, B and C Fires and are a general multi-purpose extinguisher. Powder Fire Extinguishers are safe to use on live electrical equipment but the powder residue may also cause harm to some equipment. Dry Powder Extinguishers work as the Powder reacts with the fire and the powder spreads therefore extinguishing the fire.

These extinguishers are rated as either ABE or BE. ABE rated extinguishers are considered suitable for Class A, Class B, Class C and Class E fires. They are not considered effective for Class F fires. BE rated extinguishers are considered suitable for Class B, Class C and Class E fires, and may be used with limited effectiveness on Class F fires. They are considered effective for Class A fires.

Aviation Carbon Dioxide CO2 extinguishers
Suitable for Class E fires. Has limited effectiveness on Class A, Class B and Class F fires. Has limited effectiveness on Class B fires. Not considered effective for Class F fires.

Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguishers offer protection against Class B fires that involve liquids or materials that liquefy such as petrol, oils, paints and fats. Carbon Dioxide Extinguishers discharge the extinguisher content under pressure which replaces the air surrounding the fire with the inert CO2 gas which does not support combustion therefore extinguishing the fire. Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguishers are safe for use on live electrical equipment. Carbon Dioxide Extinguishers do not leave a residue.

Aviation Wet chemical extinguishers
Suitable on Class F fires and may be used on Class A fires. Not considered effective for Class B or Class C fires and dangerous if used on Class E fires.

F Class Extinguishers
Wet Chemical (F-Class) Fire Extinguishers offer protection against fires that involve cooking oil or fats. Wet Chemical Fire Extinguishers also offer a small ‘A’ Fire Rating. No other type of fire extinguisher will be effective against fires involving cooking oil or deep fats.

Aviation Novec extinguishers

When fire breaks out in server rooms, data centres or around other sensitive electronic environments, sometimes the solution can be as damaging as the fire.

The unique Novec 1230 Fire Extinguisher (6kg) uses a sustainable chemical agent that is electrically non-conductive, , reduce the risk of damaging sensitive equipment, leaves no messy residue and requires no clean-up. It has a completely non-magnetic stainless steel shell and non-magnetic valve, hose and nozzle, and can be safely used in an MRI room.

The result is lower repair bills and less impact on business due to minimal repair times. Unlike some chemical agents, which last in the atmosphere for more than 33 years, Novec 1230 lasts for just five days, so it’s a win for the environment too.

Novec 1230 Fire Extinguishers are effective against fires involving:

Class A – Paper, textiles, wood, most plastics & rubber
Class E – Electrically energised equipment

Aviation Halogenic extinguishers
Older types of extinguishers may still be encountered. These include reversible soda acid and foam type extinguishers together with halon 1211 (BCF) type. Halon 1211 has been found to be an ozone depleting substance.
Unless special exemptions have been obtained, BCF extinguishers have been banned and should be returned to a fire protection supplier or the fire brigade as soon as possible.

Management of halon and the Gielle halon management plan.
The production of Halon has been prohibited since January 1994 in answer to the Montreal Protocol. Although the Halon systems installed before this date have not yet been prohibited in Europe, some countries have introduced laws that foresee their complete removal. Currently there are grounds for concern, especially in those cases in which there are no alternatives. The adoption of a prudent policy for the management of Halon is, therefore, vital.The situation highlights specific problems:

1. How can those users who decide to stop using Halon dispose of the gas in a safe and economical manner?

2. What other extinction agents are available?

3. How can the basic users be sure of having a supply of Halon now that the gas is no longer produced?

Gielle, world specialist in techniques of fire prevention protection, has developed a Halon Management Service which, dealing with these problems, aims to help users during the phase of their passage from Halon to an alternative agent and in the efficacious management of the existing resources.
The Gielle Management Plan offers clients a range of options.There are five main elements:

1. Halon Disposal - dismantling of Halon systems and their elimination at the client's site;

2. Recycling of the gas recovered;

3. Storage of the recycled Halon;

4. Safe destruction of the Halon, if necessary;

5. Advice on alternative extinction agents.

Those users who no longer wish to use Halon must make use of an authorised company specialised in the handling of the gas, and, in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act of 1990, they are legally required to possess a Certificate of Waste Transfer to prove that the gas was disposed of in complete safety.

Disposal
Gielle is authorised to handle Halon. The company staff is formed in teams of specialised engineers qualified in the dismantling of Halon systems. The teams remove the full containers, the pipes and the equipment and issue a Certificate of Waste Transfer. If other contracting parties are involved in the project, Gielle can safely handle the recovery of the Halon, and maintain the system safe for the later removal by the contracting party.

Alternatively, the Gielle engineers can convert, when possible, Halon systems into systems that use alternative agents.

Gielle also dismantles Halon extinguishers free of charge. The company collects the extinguishers from the clients' locations and recycles or disposes of the gas in complete safety.

Recycling
Gielle has fine tuned recovery systems for Halon 1211 and 1301. Designed by the company's Technical Division, these machines are today one of the most advanced systems for Halon recovery.

The recovery systems extract the Halon in the form of liquid and vapour and remove any trace of gas from containers and extinguishers.

The Halon recovered is passed through a filtration system that removes the impurities and returns the gas to its original chemical formula.

This process is carefully monitored by Gielle's expert engineers and the final product is tested by an independent laboratory in conformity with ISO standards and U.S. military laws.

Supply
The recycled Halon is transferred in collection cylinders designed for this purpose by Gielle. The cylinders are deposited in Gielle's Halon Bank where they are constantly monitored to prevent any losses.

Gielle can supply Halon to those clients who wish to reload their systems adapted to Halon, and offers a prompt intervention service 24 hours a day for any emergencies.

Alternative agents
The first phase to be carried out when you decide to opt for an alternative solution against the risk of fire is that of re-establishing and then evaluating the protection against fires available at the moment.

Advice and assistance
Gielle assists companies in all aspects of fire prevention protection, including the search for alternative agents to Halon. Gielle representatives carry out surveys to establish the fire dangers and recommend the most suitable and affordable fire prevention protection solution. This service implies no obligation and is supplied free of charge.

System design, installation, service
Gielle provide the services (design and installation, retrofit, recharge, and maintenance) necessary to keep your Gielle system functioning properly and in compliance with Marine fire protection regulations.
